INDUSTRIAL FINISHING: WATERBORNE WOOD FINISHES AND STAINS
AEW series white coatings have 42 percent solids by weight, and 28
percent solids by volume.
" These have low VOCs, they are HAPS and formaldehyde free,
and have low odor, " Katilac says. " They offer outstanding ease of use,
rivaling that of solvent-based topcoats. "
The final film, the company adds, exhibits very strong chemical
and physical resistance properties. The AE series clear coatings
come in 10, 20, 40 and 70 degree sheens, and the AEW series white in
10, 20 and 40 degree sheens.
KCI also has its Woodguard family of one-component polyurethane
coatings, which it says are based on the latest waterborne technology.
The AXW series consists of white coatings, and the AX series of clear
ones.
" They provide a cabinet quality finish similar in durability
to a solvent-based conversion varnish, " KCI says. " They offer
outstanding ease of use, and excellent clarity, with an appearance
indistinguishable from solvent-based conversion varnishes. "
The AX series clear coatings can be used self sealing, or with KCI's
FS1 Fibreset waterborne lignin bonding sealer.
A further KCI offering is its Aquasurf Ultra waterborne universal
primers. These are acrylic primers designed specifically for MDF
and hardwoods. Available in white (product AU1) and neutral
(product AU2), they are claimed to be fast-drying, easy to sand, and
high filling.
They also offer a reliable basecoat for any KCI topcoat. This includes
waterborne pre-catalyzed coatings, and conversion varnishes.
Sherwin-Williams, another major player in the
waterbornes business, offers a range including clear lacquers
and pigmented products, designed for furniture and fittings.
These products, the company says, significantly improve
the work environment on the production line, and radically
reduce solvent emissions to the outdoor environment.
The company's Laqva product line has an extensive
selection of wood coatings, including pigmented primers and
topcoats, while the Lacroma range features clear sealers and
topcoats. For wood flooring, there is Lacroma Parquet Pro,
Parquet Performance and Parquet Pro.
In most instances, the application method for these is
high-pressure spraying; for the flooring topcoats, it is either
by roller or manual application.
As the chemistry of working with water and minimal
becomes more familiar in the development
solvent
laboratories, formulations such as these have become much
easier to work with in the plant, and - a concern in earlier days
of waterbornes - faster to dry. Each company has its own bag
of tricks to coax higher performance out of its products, and
usually has expertise it can pass on to customers who are new
to waterbornes, or are looking to expand their use of them.
There will always be niches that only solvent-based
coatings will satisfy. But each year, the reach of waterbornes
is a little broader and deeper, and the quality levels are
increasingly higher.
