PLATING AND ANODIZING: GALVANIZING
Beyond bridges, the city of Calgary is known to specify HDG
for many kinds of infrastructure. When the city was ready to
refurbish the 7th Avenue Light Rail Transit (LRT) System in
2005, HDG was the logical choice (Figure 4). Because this project
lay on the busiest stretch of the commuter line, turnaround time
and coating durability were critical to the overall design. HDG
achieves a durable coating for many projects due to its very
tightly-bonded (~3,600 psi) and abrasion resistant intermetallic
layers, which are harder than the base steel and very difficult to
damage1

steel component of the Olivier-Charbonneau Bridge for decades
to come. Meanwhile, HDG was also specified to protect the
reinforcing steel within the concrete deck from corrosion due to
heavy de-icing salt applications planned for six months of every
year. In addition to an established track record for delaying the
onset of steel corrosion within concrete for many decades, hotdip

galvanizing are factory-controlled processes and outside factors
such as weather have little impact on their completion. This
allows articles to be rapidly erected in any weather condition
while minimizing turnaround time and construction schedules.
The design team also desired a uniform appearance across all
hardware, structural members, ornamental light posts, handrails,
benches, and trash bins.
Because all these items are suitable for HDG, its extensive
use throughout the project achieved the preferred aesthetic and
consistent protection against extreme winters and constant
traffic. A 2016 video interview with the project's engineer
on specifying HDG and its performance since installation is
available at galvanizeit.org/CalgaryLRT.
Hot-dip galvanizing is not just limited to specification for
infrastructure projects. Lightweight galvanized steel elements
are often carefully selected to achieve architectural interest for
recreation facilities, garages, and other building structures. HotComing
