coating, a micro-arc welding process
that fuses materials to substrates,
gets an automation upgrade

raditional welding methods, such as oxy-acetylene,
arc, tungsten inert gas, and metal inert gas (TIG
and MIG) welding, require high heat input. The
higher the heat input to the material being welded,
the larger the heat affected zone (HAZ). The large HAZ formed
with traditional thermal welding methods can negatively
impact material properties and weld quality, making welded
joints more brittle and leading to quality and reliability
problems. It can also result in distortion of the welded
components.
Overcoming distortion often requires pre-welding large
plates together, using bridge elements that fix the plates in
position. After removing the bridges, however, some areas
must be rewelded, and post-processing, such as straightening,
cleaning, and polishing, may be required. All this costs the
manufacturer or job shop a lot of time and money, which eats
into the bottom line.
One solution is electro spark deposition (ESD), a very
energy efficient type of welding. ESD uses little energy, often
does not need a shielding gas, and welds with no HAZ because
it cools extremely fast. This means it does not change the
characteristics or properties of the material being welded.
For more than 20 years, Weston, Ont.-based Huys
Industries Ltd. has worked on developing ESD with the
University of Waterloo. Huys serves the automotive,
aerospace, and industrial markets with its patented ESD
process and technology, which it sells or provides repair and
coating services for its customers.
Unlike other welding processes, ESD can repair just
about any metal or conductive material, including metal
carbides, according Nigel Scotchmer, president of Huys. This
is especially important for expensive components such as
turbine blades and certain dissimilar materials, which can
also be repaired, joined, and coated using ESD.
