Exchange, and in July 2021, MKS Instruments purchased
Atotech for $5.1 billion in a cash-and stock deal.
Pretreatment
Atotech has an extensive product range for cleaning, etching,
activation, pickling, metal stripping and aluminum treatment.
There are pretreatment solutions for most metal substrates,
including steel, iron, copper, copper alloys, zinc, zinc alloys,
aluminum and nickel.
Corrosion Protection
The company offers a full range of plating chemicals for
zinc and zinc alloy electroplating and zinc flake coating.
Applications include fasteners such as screws, bolts,
rivets, clamps, and pins, as well as springs for automotive,
construction, oil and gas, and wind energy applications.
Brake and chassis components are also relevant.
Decorative Coatings
Atotech has a full range of copper, nickel, nickel alloy and
chrome electrolytic processes, as well as environmentallyfriendly
trivalent chromium solutions. It also provides a broad
range of colors to meet contemporary design requirements
Applications for these include interior and exterior vehicle
components, such as trim, handles, emblems, aluminum
rims; shower heads, bathroom faucets and general fittings;
hinges, fashion items, jewelry and cosmetic products.
There are also applications within automotive, sanitary,
furniture, solar cells, consumer electronics, consumer goods,
cosmetics and fashion industries.
Plating Chemicals
The company has a full range of plating chemicals: acid
copper, rotogravure copper, pyrophosphate copper, immersion
copper, copper alloys, copper strike and non-cyanide alkaline
copper. In particular, it specializes in acid copper processes
for a wide variety of applications These products the company
says, offers excellent throwing power, superb leveling and
high ductility.
Plating on Plastics
Atotech has processes for conventional and direct
plating on plastics such as ABS, ABS/PC, PA, PP as well
as additive manufactured (3D printing) plastics like PA,
epoxides, acrylates and other exotic plastics. These offer
outstanding selective plating properties and efficiency. It
also supplies auxiliary equipment to reduce environmental
impact and production costs. Applications are found within
the automotive, sanitary, plumbing, furniture, consumer
electronics, consumer goods, cosmetics and fashion
industries.
Wear Resistance
Atotech offers a comprehensive product portfolio of hard
chrome and electroless nickel processes. The hard chrome
process range includes BluCr, the first industrial trivalent
hard chrome process available in the market.
There are also chrome, fume suppressants, pretreatment
and post-treatment for hard chrome plating. There is also
a full range of high, medium and low phosphorus deposits,
composite coatings, pretreatment and post-treatment for
electroless nickel plating. The portfolio is completed by
DynaChrome, a unique system for hard chrome plating of
shock absorber rods and electrodialysis for electroless
nickel plating (EDEN). Automotive applications include
fuel injection rails, pistons, shock absorbers, piston rings,
carburetors, fuel pumps and slip yokes. Applications for the
oil and gas industry include ball valves, drilling components,
tubular components, cable glands and gate plugs. There
are also applications within the heavy machinery, consumer
electronics, and food industries.
Paint Support
The company has a full range of products for pretreatment,
paint removal and paint overspray treatment applications.
These technologies offer a sustainable alternative to
conventional processes, free of hazardous/regulated
substances while supporting CO2 reduction. They provide
applicators with an economical process providing longer
solution life, reducing waste generation and product
consumption.
Equipment
For 60 years Atotech has designed and produced systems for
the plating industry at its site in Feucht, near Nuremberg,
Germany, and in Guangzhou, China, since 2003. The
equipment, plating lines as well as auxiliary systems,
features state-of-the-art automation technology and is
designed to increase the plating efficiency and maximize
throughput while minimizing environmental footprint. MKS'
Atotech equipment technology contributes to minimizing
energy consumption, by means of such things as optimized
exhaust air systems and wastewater reduction, efficient
pumps, and motors, employed in combination with control
system intelligence.
