PAINT AND COATINGS MANUFACTURING: WOMEN IN COATINGS
to invest in our laboratory personnel, space, and equipment
to ensure we can support our customers. I have seen our lab
space, personnel, and equipment expand threefold in my tenure
at Dynamix. Being a part of a customer's success by helping
them maintain their solutions and ensuring the highest quality
product is very rewarding. "
Regarding what areas of the industry interest Janice most,
she considers how the continuous regulatory changes to the
surface finishing industry ensure process and new product
learning never ends. The transition from hex chrome to trivalent
chrome passivates, including formulating away from cobalt and
nickel, has fascinated her. Also, she adds, the transition from
hexavalent to trivalent chrome plating keeps things interesting.
" As raw material costs continue to increase, we see customers
becoming more and more creative with how they use their
chemical processes, and I enjoy being a part of the innovation in
the industry. There has been a big switch in the school of thought
around process control along these same lines. It is becoming
evident that many production facilities have implemented better
process controls to get the most out of their chemistry, which in
the long run makes them more competitive and efficient. In the
future, I hope to stay involved with customers, enabling them to
keep up with the industry's changing trends and an increased
regulatory role. "
Trends in the industry that excite Jacula currently involve
the change in the food, medical and aerospace industries moving
to smooth stainless steel (that does not allow the harbouring
of bacteria). " This started before the COVID-19 pandemic,
but it certainly seems to have accelerated in the last couple
of years. Many are switching from historical processes in
passivating stainless steel commonly used with Nitric Acid to
electropolishing the same surfaces to create a smoother surface. "
We asked Jacula who she would consider a source of
inspiration, to which she answered: " I can honestly say the
inspiration trickles down from the top at Dynamix. Since my
introduction here, customer success has always been the focus.
The countless hours dedicated to hands-on teaching and in
the lab, troubleshooting is not something you can learn from a
book. "
