PLATING AND ANODIZING: NICKEL PLATING
The dissolution characteristics are
similar to other non-activated nickel
anodes and they are claimed to dissolve
at 100 percent anode efficiency in
common nickel electroplating solutions
that contain chlorides. Dissolution
produces a small amount of metallic
residues. The chips are disc-like in
shape, with a typical thickness of 4
- 6mm and diameter of 17 - 22mm,
making them suitable for plating from
titanium baskets with standard mesh
sizes.
" The unique shape allows the
material to pack tightly in the baskets, "
the company says, " thus preventing the
formation of " bridges that can create
voids in the basket load. This results in
more uniform current distribution and
deposit thickness, as well as preventing
electrochemical attack of the titanium
basket in the area of the voids, which
form when square shaped anodes
are used. " The chips are free of sharp
edges which make for easy handling
and basket loading and enables the
basket load to settle without the aid of
any ramming action that can result in
basket damage.
Atotech has a comprehensive
product portfolio of electroless nickel
processes including composite coatings
with PTFE and SiC, and plating on
magnesium for high corrosion and
wear
resistance.
This
includes
complete range of high, medium and low
phosphorus deposits.
Its Nichem lead- and cadmium-free
range is for heavy metal-free stabilized
electroless nickel processes that need to
be free of toxic components. There is also
a full range of pretreatment products
for multi metal application, including
electrodialysis products for electroless
nickel plating (EDEN). Applications
here would include items such as fuel
injection rails, pistons, shock absorbers,
carburetors, fuel pumps and slip yokes,
or oil and gas industry parts such as ball
valves, drilling components, tubular
components, cable glands and gate
plugs.
" The modern demands of an
electroless nickel plating operation
are high, and the applications range
anywhere from high production
automotive to lower volume job shop, "
the company points out. " Typically, an
electroless nickel process is specifically
suited to an application. A new process
should cover diverse demands and be

suitable for a range of surface areas and multiple substrates. "
Nichem MP 1188 is an example of a fully bright mid-phosphorus plating process capable
of standing up to the highest production demands, Atochem states. It also provides the
flexibility needed to accommodate a range of surface areas and multiple substrates.
It reportedly has outstanding initiation on copper and brass. It also presents a high
tolerance to zinc contamination thus allowing direct plating on zincated aluminum alloys
throughout a prolonged bath life without sacrificing brightness or adhesion.
One of MacDermid Enthone's specialty products is its line for electroless nickel plating.
The high hardness of this material, the company says, leads to improved wear and abrasion
resistance in plated components. Typical examples of these include automotive cylinder
