complex shape. This eliminates any need for expensive post-plate grinding as well as
respecting the dimensional tolerance of even the finest of components.
" Electroless plating gives deposits which are free from pitting, " the company adds. " This
means that fewer reworks are required due to surface defects. " This factor is particularly
important when plating aluminum hard disk drives. In this application, the nickel alloy
coating provides hardness and corrosion protection to the aluminum substrate. "
The compressive stress helps to maintain the integrity of the coating throughout the

cracking of the deposit. This could lead to expensive servicing in long term applications
such as deep-sea valves used by the offshore oil industry, and cylinder liners in vehicles.

an important factor for memory disk applications. "

Alternatively, they may choose a semi-bright deposit to avoid reflectivity. Electrical
connectors for military coatings with a semi-bright or black finish provide a good example.
Lastly, cost effectiveness is always a factor in any industrial process. Electroless nickel

specialize in custom machinery

serving customers with components
suited to existing lines as well as more
elaborate installations. It will also
design a complete plating facility.

the nickel plating process with new
technology is very unlikely. However,
incremental improvements are sure to
continue for many years to come.
As metallurgists keep on learning
more about the micro-behavior of
their metals, and the effects of changes
to micro-domains within their matrix,
the predictability and consistency
of plating can only improve. The
people who began doing it 170 years
ago would be proud of how their first
efforts eventually turned out.
