PAINT AND COATINGS MANUFACTURING: MIXING & DISPERSION
build-up can occur midprocessing
thus preventing the
rest of the solids from being fully
dissolved. On the other hand,
charging too fast can cause some
powders to clump up. These
agglomerates can form a tough
outer layer which prevents the
complete wetting of the interior
particles. These " fisheyes " lead
to solution defects such as grainy
texture and reduced viscosity.
The high shear conditions
usually needed to break up these
agglomerates may over shear the
already hydrated or dispersed
particles leading to a permanent
loss in viscosity. When equipped
with the ROSS Solids/Liquid
Injection
Manifold
powder
(SLIM)
Technology, the PreMax ensures
efficient
induction
and generates an intense subsurface
vacuum in the high shear
zone that sucks in powders into
a fluid stream. Since the solids
and liquids
are combined at
the exact point where intense
mixing takes place, the SLIM
can generate high quality
dispersions, immediately.
Some common powders
injected through the SLIM:
Iron Oxide
Latex Powders
Precipitated Silica
Pulp Dust
Rosin Ester and Resin
Titanium Dioxide
Acrylic Polymers
Alginates
Carbon Black
Dye Powders
Fumed Silica
Graphite
Processing advantages of
the SLIM Technology
Cleaner and safer mixing - A
" hose and wand " attachment is
used for dipping into bulk bags or
containers to induct free flowing
powders without creating a
dusty environment. Another
method is to load pre-weighed
solids into a SLIM feed hopper at
floor level. Either way, operators
no longer need to climb up
mezzanines carrying heavy bags
of powder or manually add raw materials from the top of the batch tank.
Accelerated processing - The SLIM routinely cuts process times by 80 per cent or
more compared to traditional batch mixing processes.
Higher quality dispersions - Dispersing solids sub-surface using a SLIM mixer
eliminates floating powders and stubborn lumps or agglomerates. Manufacturers achieve
consistent product quality in a very repeatable and cost-efficient manner.
The ultra-high shear mixer technology is reshaping the premix process for paint and
coatings manufacturing. It's one of the newer mixing technologies to consider when looking
to reduce production time and costs while enhancing product quality. With its versatile
design and SLIM Technology for sub-surface powder induction, manufacturers can easily
meet regulatory demands, satisfy customer needs, and drive continuous improvement.
