The next piece he looked for was the paint line. Through
online research he narrowed his list down to three top
suppliers. But it was the Gema Magic Booth with quick colour
change that won the spot at the end of Proslat's finishing line.
" We were very clear from the get-go that price was
important, but we needed a company that was going to be
supportive and help us when it came to finishing the product, "
says Letham. " I mean 10-degrees too much on a colour and
you can get overspray. Is my ground too high on black and low
on red? People say powder coating is easy, but there are so
many factors involved that can mess you up. "
" When Eric was looking at bringing manufacturing to
Canada, we had a long conversation about technologies and
the products they wanted to produce, " says Shawn Hayes,
Gema's regional sales manager for eastern US and Canada.
" One of the things that was different with this application is
that they didn't produce any of the parts in Canada yet. So it's
like going from nothing to 100 miles an hour fully producing
products. "
" We had many discussions as we tried to figure out the best
solution that would work for them long term, but also allow
them to grow with technology. We supplied our compact
Magic Booth with fast colour change that has automated
light curtains that will adjust and recognise product height
and width, " says Hayes. " There are guns over the top and
underneath, and the ZA07 reciprocating guns on a XT10
positioning base with auto in and out. "

Even though the Gema system is highly automated, Hayes
says that Proslat still has room to grow. Given the shape of
the toolboxes and some narrow gaps there is some manual
intervention to remedy any faraday areas.
" We designed the booth so there is the potential to add
robotics for those touch up processes, " says Hayes. " One of
the things Eric was big on was wanting a system that operated
with a minimal amount of manual intervention. And we
needed some help, that's why we got Ventcor involved. "
Toronto-based Ventcor is a system integrator that
specialises in designing and building industrial ovens,
washers, conveyor systems, spray booths and environmental
rooms.
