Klein Tools:
The people at Klein Tools spend a lot of time talking to contractors and the
people doing the work on jobsites. The company has built its reputation by
solving problems for contractors. A key aspect of product development is
consulting trade professionals to determine what their pain points are and if
they can alleviate them through a new product design.
" If you go on a jobsite and look for the duct tape, you can always find a
problem that needs to be solved, " said Klein Tools VP of Marketing, Greg
Palese. " An easy way for us to look into expanding product lines or into
different categories is to see what people are doing and what solutions they
come up with on their own. We can go back to the drawing board, develop
something that is better, safer, and more valuable for them to help get their job
done. "
There have been instances where Klein has gone to a jobsite and found
people with tools taped together to make a particular job easier, which has led
Klein to develop multi-tools.
" One of things we're finding is there is really a need to lighten the load of
people's tool bags and tool pouches, " said Palese.
In recent years, Klein has released a variety of multi-tools, including its 7-in-1
in an effort to help
Flip Socket, 14-1 and 27-1 Precision Screwdriver,
tradespeople lighten their tool bag, as well as work more efficiently. Rather
than having to bring four or five tools up the ladder for a particular job, it's now
one or two.
Safety is an important focus for Klein. It's not an area the company has
historically been known for, however this year they have released a series of
insulated screwdrivers as well as a new line of head-to-toe PPE products.
The electrical test kit they recently released is an update on a previous
model that includes \ additional equipment, created with the goal of
providing value and durability to end-users. Other new products, such as the
Advanced Circuit Tracer Kit have also been well received in the marketplace.
" We created a line of meters that are tough, durable and priced just right so
that people can use them every day and not be afraid to take them on a jobsite
with dirty conditions, or take it up a ladder with them. If something does
happen to it, you're not out $300. "
Growth is an important focus for Klein Tools. The company is constantly
researching and developing new product lines and product categories to
expand into. Which, beyond solving problems and making the job easier for
trade professionals, also allows them to remain at the forefront in a highly
competitive marketplace.
Klein is still a family run company, which may be overlooked given the
prominence of their brand, which carries quite a bit of weight. A key
component of their success is to continue to grow the products they offer and
the market segments they operate in and improve on the tools they've already
released.
Klein is also seeing a lot of opportunity for jobsite power to run power or
corded tools, as well as lighting. With that they have also launched some cord
management solutions.
