A Liferaft technician Jason has repacked and serviced liferafts that have saved lives including the students aboard the sV Concordia in 2010 and most recently the 20 metre fishing boat Poseidon Princess which sank this past January. Nova Scotia Boat Builders Association Nova Scotia Marine Industry Conference From the perils of the Alaskan crab fishery to a lively debate on the virtues, or not, of hybrid propulsion, the attendees at this year's nova scotia Boatbuilders Association (nsBA) annual conference were both entertained and enlightened by a diverse group of presenters. nsBA has been holding these industry gatherings since 2005 and this year's event, held February 26 and 27 at the Lord nelson hotel in halifax, was the best attended to date. the good vibe may have had something to do with the excellent venue. rather than meeting in a soulless hotel rent-a-hall (we've all been in too many) under fluorescent lights, the meetings and reception were held in two beautifully restored halls of this historic hotel. Attendees gathered under paintings of Lord nelson's victories which has to be good karma for boat builders. nsBA executive director tim edwards and the presenters were able to strike a good balance between entertaining and educating, without any presentation being too technical for the diverse crowd. Aaron Porter - Trends in boat design and construction Aaron Porter, editor of Professional Boatbuilder magazine gave an overview of some of the current trends in the boatbuilding industry. Although he is now based in maine, Aaron grew up boating and sailing on his father's schooner in Lunenburg County. In looking at companies which survived the severe recession in new boat manufacture Aaron emphasised diversified capabilities. Assembly line boats may be cost efficient to produce but it is very hard to quickly adapt to changes in the marketplace. Companies such as morris yachts in maine were able to refocus on storage, refit and repair in order to keep their workforce in place. Another notable maine company which powered through the downturn is Brooklin boatyard with their ability in traditional boats and new spirit of traditional yachts. the maintenance and refit of superyachts can make a very significant contribution to the local economy. discussing the Rylan's Rig recently launched by DesChamps & Jackson.
