F E AT U R E Winter Work How they did it - two Ontario marinas that run year-round BY ANDY ADAMS NO BANK IS OFFERING a 10-month mortgage; no car company offers an 8-month lease; everything is done on a 12month basis. And understandably, young people compare potential paycheques when they are looking at post-secondary education and their career options. In fact, most colleges pride themselves on assisting their grads in finding employment and the compensation expectations for various careers is information that the colleges provide. It's easy to compare. In Canada, even on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, some marine technicians are laid off in the off-season, while throughout Ontario and Quebec, it's a very common practice. 16 Boating Industry Canada AUGUST 2016 Today, our industry is facing a serious shortage of young technicians coming in at a time when many of the senior techs are retiring. Another sea-change is that our middle class is fading in business importance and a smaller number of much more affluent buyers are keeping our industry going. One boat company executive expressed it to me as "the gentrification" of boating. To attract new technicians into the marine industry and to groom talented ones for future senior positions, we need to offer competitive compensation for the quality of service that the new wealthy boaters expect and to do that, the marine industry must provide 12-month employment.
