sonal to a 12-month operation.
At the beginning of our conversation, Michael Kelly referred
to Peter Lyons and said that Lyons was one of the first in
Ontario to pioneer year-round work when he opened Queen's
Cove 35 years ago - an interesting recommendation given that
they were the other marina I had planned to interview.
Queen's Cove was set up from the beginning to run yearround and Andy Genis was a part of that from the early
days. Current owner John Swick and his Team have continued to do this and are always looking at ways to grow the
'off-season' business.
Year-round work means year-round cash flow and it means
that the business is making the most of the investments in
assets like the property, buildings, the shop and tools, fork lifts,
trailers and so on.

To learn more we contacted Michael Kelly, the owner of
Bayview Yacht Harbour and Andy Genis, Service Manager at
Queen's Cove Marina.
The 12-month Philosophy
Michael Kelly's opening comment was that it comes down to

The Employee Perspective
Michael Kelly pointed out that some employees have to
work seven days a week in the summer so they want time
off in the winter.
Andy Genis echoed that some people do want time off and
that having an off-season layoff (instead of being a problem),
can be a benefit for certain employees. Another thing he mentioned is that some people want more training.
Queen's Cove has sent people to the Gougeon Brothers (of
West System Epoxy fame) for training in the United States on
such things as osmotic blister repair, and they have sent people
for woodworking or electronics training too. The key to doing
this is "employee commitment". If a person expresses an interest in an area that's valuable to the business, support that person in the growth and development of their career. Also having
