Well, perhaps that's a bit harsh but it's quite apparent that marine businesses really don't resemble much of the 'lamestream' business world. We don't operate on Main Street, in office towers or in malls. Not even in automotive malls or something similar. Largely, marine enterprises operate away from the centre, away from the community down Highway 72 and across the lake. On Main Street or at the mall, businesses participate in Midnight Madness promotions, sidewalk sales, Christmas with Santa and so on. Out on the Point, it's just you and your accountant looking at each other wanly contemplating an Excel look at winter revenue numbers. It's a lonely existence (sniff). If you were part of a larger selling community, you might be able to capitalize and generate some off-season sales. After all, wasn't that why Black Friday, Boxing Week and Back to School 22 Boating Industry Canada AUGUST 2016 were invented? Let's look at other retail practices to see what we can appropriate in order to beef up winter service and equipment sales. Perhaps those land based merchandising practices can be borrowed and adapted to bring some winter warmth to the marine biz bottom line. Labour Day/Thanksgiving Sale. More boaters are around for the early September weekend, but it may be hard to get their attention during the period when the loudest noise comes from Wal-Mart flogging backpacks. With the right offer, signage, advance notice, advertising etc. you can hopefully attract attention. Naturally, the big magnet is a hot deal and it being Labour Day, perhaps you can sell some labour. Gelcoat repairs, reupholstery, re-wiring and so on, rack up the hours. Maybe a
