ABYC What's Wrong with this Picture? BY DAVID BROADBENT - ABYC TECHNICAL STANDARDS SPECIALIST It's time again for everyone's favourite article "What's Wrong With This Picture?" At first glance, the picture for this article certainly seems to have a lot going on. First, let's begin with the fuel system. I think we can safely assume that a fuel system is located within an engine compartment, and therefore metallic bowls would be required under the fuel filters. This requirement can get confusing as nowhere does it say you MUST have a metallic bowl. It comes down to the requirements of H-33 Diesel Fuel Systems and within UL 1105 that call for a 2 ½ minute fire test. These components generally cannot pass the test without some sort of added shielding. Also, we would have to check the proximity of the fuel component to the batteries. E-10 calls for a 12 inch shielding envelope for metallic fuel components, and even though we cannot see the battery configuration in this photo, it is important to note based on its proximity. Sticking strictly to some of the electrical issues now, it looks like there are multiple locations where conductors are not supported every 18 inches. There is a fuse block under the fuel filter that does not have a cover on it to protect from metallic objects making contact. This is a good example of a situation where I think there should be some type of chafe protection on the conductors. Lastly, the portable fire extinguishers are not mounted. A-4 Fire Fighting Equipment does not say they must be mounted, but does say they should be installed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Did I cover everything? Do you see any other issues? I welcome your feedback and would love to see any of your pictures that would make for great discussion in the next edition of "What's Wrong With This Picture?".
