It Is, In Fact,
Easy Being Green

'What's it gonna cost me?' is the normal question associated
with thinking green. But for a marine business, environmental
concerns can actually be a positive force.
The most important aspect of green thinking is PR.
While you can wave the flag a bit too wantonly, Canadians
really are beginning to see the environmental issues we face
as serious concerns. This might have been on everyone's
front lobe in November when the City of Montreal dumped
- how much was it? - Yes, eight billion litres of raw sewage
into the St Lawrence.
The opportunities for your business to embrace sound
green practices make green products available and help spread
the word are many. And almost none of them will take you
beyond what you are currently doing as a regulated business
that disposes of oil, antifreeze, batteries and waste legally.
Thinking green not only offers some extraordinary marketing and PR wins, it also can generate direct revenues. Who said
good citizenship isn't without its rewards!
There are a number of tips aimed at consumers on discover-

boating.ca that you can adopt as advice for your consumers
and, in some cases, make necessity a virtue that creates revenue
channels not to mention showing leadership. Not only that,
but you have an opportunity to influence boaters for the good,
which will contribute to a positive bump for your staff too.
Maintenance
In the automotive world manufacturers are eager to brag about
low fuel consumption. You can enjoy the same opportunity by
educating boaters to understand that a properly maintained
engine both uses less fuel and also creates lower emissions.
That means replacing plugs, cleaning injectors and even
switching to more modern, cleaner outboards. The message is
to minimize your environmental footprint and all of the engine
manufacturers are quick to point out their new accomplishments. Make that positioning your own.
Proper antifouling paint (non-metallic, non-toxic) and regular attention to cleaning growth, barnacles, zebra mussels and
other grunge off the hull will decrease hull resistance and add
