Safe Water Made Simple
BY GLEN CAIRNS
Quality on-board drinking water has been an elusive and difficult task to achieve for boat owners around the world. Current
solutions range from cumbersome flats of bottled water, to
power hungry purification systems that take up scarce power
and valuable space. Ask any group of boaters what they think
of their onboard freshwater quality and many of them will suggest not using it for drinking purposes. Vancouver-born Acuva
Technologies is leveraging innovative research from the
University of British Columbia to develop a novel ultraviolet
light-emitting diode (UV-LED) water purification system that
runs on a small battery, produces high quality purified water
(the company claims 99.99% inactivation of microorganisms)
and is effectively maintenance free. This novel system may well
change the way water is purified on boats.
"We've spoken to numerous boat owners and almost every
single one of them were dissatisfied with their onboard drinking water," said Acuva CEO, Manoj Singh. "We have designed,
built, and successfully tested a new generation of water purifiers to provide boat owners with on-demand drinking water
on-board using UV-LED based system."
Acuva's product Arrow Premium is designed to eliminate
the hardest to kill microbes by directing a lethal dose of UV
radiation to water with unknown purity levels and collected
from risky sources. Arrow Essential is designed to purify water
already stored and filtered, reassuring microbe free levels by
eliminating possible contaminations inside the storage tank
and supply line.
The UV-LED operated Acuva reactor is based on one of the
best possible water purification systems, and is designed to
maximize disinfection and maintain a compact, low-power
product. The UV-LED technology inactivates harmful microbes
at the point-of-use, eliminating the need for chemical disinfections, often-ineffective filtration systems, or bulky UV lamp
reactors. Further, the innovative use of LEDs eliminates the
high maintenance time and cost which often plague typical
purification systems.
With their product launch scheduled for the Vancouver
Boat Show on January 2016, Acuva is reaching out to boat
owners and manufacturers to let them know about their innovative UV purification system.

Seaweed Marine Products
BY GLEN CAIRNS
Rudy Zander, owner of Anchor Welding lnc., located in
Cambridge, Ontario, has been in operation since 1982. ln
2005, he incorporated Seaweed® Marine and a new product
called Tend'r Rollers®, a marine roll on davit system. The company holds two patents, one Canadian and one U. S. Other
boaters saw the Tend'r Roller® system and wanted one for
themselves and so he went into production.
Today the Seaweed® Marine product, Tend'r Rollers® are
available in three sizes:
Standard Light for up to 475 Ibs., Standard Heavy for up to
750 Ibs., and Super Heavy which can handle dinghies and
PWC's up to 1200 Ibs. The company also offers extended systems for boats with narrow swim platforms. Their systems are
manual hand winch or wireless remote.
