Tuning in on an Ever-Evolving
Technology
This article was originally published in the NMEA member magazine, Marine Electronics Journal, MEJ.
MOST OF MEJ'S COVERAGE of satellite TV focuses on the
latest hardware-the stabilized antennas and receivers that
provide yachts and working vessels with pretty much worldwide access to a wide spectrum of programming. In the Q&A
roundtable below we expand our coverage to some of the
issues and challenges that currently confront antenna manufacturers as well as what's ahead. We'll do the same with VSAT
systems in the September/October issue.
We're grateful to the Sat TV experts below and the companies they represent-KVH Industries; Cobham; and
Intellian-for responding to our questions in detail.
Mads Ebbesen, Business Manager,
Maritime TV, Cobham SATCOM
Paul Comyns, VP Global Marketing, Intellian
Jim George, Director of Satellite Sales; and Shawn Bennett,
TracVision Applications Engineer, KVH
MEJ: Please comment on the current health of the Sat TV business in the recreational market-as well as in the various commercial maritime sectors?
COBHAM: Overall the current global economy and oil price
insecurity is felt in most maritime markets, some more than
others. Investment is lower and there is more focus on cost
reductions.
