Canadian Boating May 2024 - 38
After having crossed the USA border and Lake Champlain,
I travelled through the locks and reached Catskill NY where
the mast was re-stepped. Indian Summer 1 was a sailboat
again.
as giving time for the spring debris to clear
the way.
In terms of safety, I was using the Ham radio system
(VE2RLW) to download the weather grib files and talk to
people on shore. I also use the Garmin Inreach system
to report my position, send and receive small messages
and call for help if necessary. I also have an Epirb beacon
and a liferaft should the boat sink.
An inflatable life-vest with a tether to the jack line is also
in use on passages.
As for provisions, I did a list of the dry food that I would
need for three months, purchased and delivered the
items to the boat in multiple trips. I found that the nutritional
drinks (e.g. Ensure) are a good way to keep you
energized without having to cook meals while navigating.
Before departing from Canada, I had the mast taken
down and placed on the deck on a wooden frame.
This is required to pass under the bridges of the 12 locks
of the NYS canal system.
I took the opportunity to extend the spinnaker track to
the spreader so that I could stow the spinnaker pole in
front of the mast and out of the way.
Navigating the Hudson river and anchoring in NewYork
City by the Statue of Liberty is quite an experience. I left
Sandy Hook on June 14 for the Azores, Horta on the island
of Faial being my destination.
Although I had a few mishaps prior to departure from
NYC, it was going as planned until the backstay broke
at the top of the mast on the 22nd of June. I rigged a
temporary backstay using a spare halyard I had installed
before re-stepping the mast. I looked at the chart plotter
for direction and found that returning to NYC was
700NM while Halifax was 414NM. So Halifax became my
new destination. I was sailing with only a 3rd reef on the
mainsail to minimize stress on the mast.
As the wind died down at about three days off Halifax,
I turned on the engine at a low RPM and I had enough
fuel to make it to the Northwest Arm in Halifax on June
28 2022.
Once the repairs were done and after some visiting of
the Nova Scotia coast, I decided to change plans and
sail down the East coast of the USA and head to the
Caribbean directly.
For the months of July, August and September, I sailed
back to NYC and then the Chesapeake Bay. I left Indian
Summer 1 at a marina in Norfolk for the entire month
of October to return home and take a pause. During
that time, three boats docked beside mine burned down
and I would have lost my boat if the firefighters had not
sprayed her all the time the fire lasted.
