Canadian Yachting December 2022 - 39
This tour marked the first time some of the rowers were in
'coastal' quads - boats designed for rough water with four
people sculling and one in the coxswain seat steering. A
few rather erratic routes were observed as the steering can
be quite sensitive. On average, the boats covered about 30
kilometres per day but some - who shall remain nameless
- covered a bit more. The total distance covered over the
six days of rowing was 185 kilometres with 39 kilometres
being the longest one-day trek.
The weather forecast caused some last minute uncertainty
for the organizers but very pleasant conditions prevailed.
The late summer sun even invited a few swims at the lunch
stop beaches and the crews managed to out-row some
stormy skies that provided some great photo opportunities
that left everyone dry in the end.
For about 50 percent of the participants, this was their
first World Rowing Tour experience. The other 50 percent
had done some and, in some cases, many World Rowing
Tours prior. The 10 crew captains were named at the beginning
of the tour and they stayed with the same boat
throughout the tour but their crews changed each day.
This gave the opportunity for participants to get to know
each other better and to share rowing experiences more
widely. Many of the first time World Rowing Tour rowers
left vowing that it would not be their last tour.
The farewell banquet was held at Old Fort Henry following
a tour of the fort. Following the tradition of past World
Rowing Tour gala dinners, rowers from each participating
country had the chance to thank the other participants and
organizers from the podium. The Danish crew delighted
everyone with an interactive song that had been composed
during bus rides to and from the boats. It perfectly
captured the fun and adventure filled week.
It was wonderful to see long friendships rekindled and new
ones formed. The sound of laughter, constantly mixing
with different languages and accents provided a memorable
backdrop to the tour.
Thank you to the wonderful team of volunteers for all of
their contributions, and to the international visitors who
came, rowed and enjoyed.
More information can be found about rowing through
local rowing clubs as well as at Row Ontario. ■
