BOAT SHOWS ARE BACK!
Welcome to the February 2023 edition of Canadian Yachting magazine
and a glimpse into several of the new boats that you can expect to see
at the boat shows this winter - the fi rst Canadian boat shows
in almost three years! It's hard to believe so much time has
passed.
But the marine manufacturers have been working at
top speed developing new boat designs, new engines
and a universe of new systems and accessories. With the
shutdowns driven by COVID, boating offered the freedom
so many people wanted and not surprisingly, product
shortages were real, almost unavoidable and a reaction to the
red-hot boating market of the past two summers. Most manufacturers
have started to catch up to the customer demand but if you want a new
boat for this summer, call your dealer now or head to the boat shows with
a chequebook!
At the shows, you will see a number of boat brands and designs that
are new to the Canadian market. As a preview, we have gathered a
selection of new power boats from ten different builders in our Gallery
of New Boats starting on page 10 of this issue. Then, on page 16, our sail
reviewer, Katherine Stone brings us her Sneak Peek on six new sailboats
from the most popular builders.
Showing us a delicious taste of a grand boat is a Feature story on
page 22 by regular CY contributor John Morris. It's McHappy, a profi le
of George Cohon of McDonalds restaurants fame and his Hinckley,
appropriately named McHappy.
We wanted to give you more variety in the boats we cover. So, in this
issue, we have just one traditional Power Boat review. It's on the very
appealing Parker 800 Weekend - a great new family cruiser at a very
attractive price point.
Then, we introduce to our Canadian Yachting readers, three writers
whose work is new to our pages. Steven J. Bull writes a Destination
feature on Western Lake Ontario where he has cruised extensively with
his family. That starts on page 26.
On page 36, Jeff Butler, Editor at Plugboats.com brings us his State
of the Electric Boat Market - a comprehensive rundown of the electric
boats racing to get to the market. Jeff is a Canadian who has earned an
international reputation for his reporting on this emerging new segment
of the boating market.
The third writer is Canadian sailor, racer and gonzo journalist, Richard
(Danger) Mitchele who attended the press launch of the grand new
Lagoon 51 in Spain and reports his experiences for your enjoyment and
edifi cation! He also sails a second catamaran - a Spanish boat called a
Patin. His story is titled A Tale of Two Kitties. It starts on page 54.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Canadian Yachting and if you are
