Has a song popped up on the radio that
immediately takes you back to a time in
your life when the innocence of youth was
yours to embrace with nary a care in the
world?

In today's edition of The Port Hole, an excellent feature article penned by Sarnia
Power and Sail Squadron member Jeff Evans had much the same effect, reminding
me of the power of the written word when
it comes to recalling a special memory
from my youth.
In his article, Jeff recounts his boyhood experience of seeing both the S.S. Keewatin
and S.S. Assiniboia depart Port McNicoll
on Georgian Bay for the voyage to Thunder
Bay as well as his up-close-and-personal
late 1960s introduction to, and subsequent
infatuation with, the historic Yellowbird
and Miss Supertest racing boats. Jeff's
memory of those experiences is as clear as

his young life.

Navy, the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy - was the ultimate playground
for this adventurous kid.
Between 1937 and 1945, HMCS Haida sank
more enemy surface tonnage than any other Canadian warship. I was mesmerized as
Dad - the smartest man in the world, I
was convinced - detailed highlights of her
service during both the Second World War
and the Korean War while I climbed up
and down ladders and, of course, manned
the bridge.
Years later, during a trip to Cleveland to
catch a three-game set between the Blue
Jays and the Indians, I was delighted to
discover The Forest City is home to the
USS Cod, a Gato-class submarine which
came into service in June 1943 and served
in the Pacific Ocean. It was a full circle
thing for me as my boys climbed up and
down ladders, and, of course, manned the
bridge. Whether I was the smartest man in
the world in their eyes was, and remains,
open to debate but I did my best to provide
them with a running commentary.

I know many of you, as boaters, have memories of your youth related to watercraft,
whether it be a run-about or something
much more majestic. I would love to share
those memories with Port Hole readers.
