A
s marine writers who travel the Salish Sea (Inside
Passage), we often get asked by visiting boaters to
assist them in laying out Gulf Island cruise plans taking in "our favourite" ports.
The hundreds of islands of the San Juan-Gulf Island archipelago form one of the best cruising grounds to be found anywhere. Here, tucked away within a rugged natural beauty, you
will find scenic harbours, marine parks, quaint villages, fine
foods, flowers, farmers' markets, rural golf and much more.
In our biased view, a West Coast visit would not be complete
until boaters have explored the Gulf Islands and the southern
Vancouver Island region. This cruise plan is but a sampling of
what you can expect to find in the Gulf Islands cruising area.
Our Gulf Island cruise runs roughly south to north in a counterclockwise loop. The trip can be accomplished in 10 days but
two weeks would give you a much more leisurely look at the
islands we call home.
We will start in Sidney-by-the-Sea; visit Otter Bay, North
Pender Island; Ganges, Salt Spring Island; Telegraph Harbour,
Thetis Island; Nanaimo; and end in Genoa Bay.
SHORE LEAVE #1
SIDNEY, VANCOUVER ISLAND
Sidney-by-the-Sea's convenient location, coupled with the fact
that it has two of the area's finest marinas - Port Sidney and
Van Isle Marina, one of Sidney's fuel docks - makes it an
excellent first stop. Village-like Sidney allows you to walk
everywhere, and the many unique shops and B.C. liquor store
nearby ease provisioning.
Known as a "Booktown" for its six independent book stores,
this is a great place to fill your summer reading list before venturing out for a waterfront walk, fine meal or visit to the Shaw
Ocean Discovery Centre, an aquarium and marine education
WHEN EXPLORING THE SALISH SEA
B.C. Charts
Before navigating B.C. waters, make sure you have
the proper charts for the region. For the Gulf
Island/Southern Vancouver Island region, we
recommend chart book 3313, Gulf Islands,
published by the Canadian Hydrographic Service
and sold at marine supply stores.
