CROSSING THE LINE

James: rhapsody in the engine compartment.
Finally I was able to invite Richard to dinner. After all the help
he had given me - welding my cradle, fixing my wiring and
more, refusing to take even ten bucks for his help.
The dinner was not fancy but the room looked festive and
packed when we walked in. I wondered if Richard would show up
so I was delighted to see he was there, until I got a little closer.
As the volunteer team served the salads, Richard was blowing out our carburetor. The butterfly valve and some small
springs were arrayed on the tablecloth beside his fork. "Don't
drink any fuel," I cautioned him, concerned how the gasoline
would react with the soup. He just grinned in that
fanatic/amused way he does when he is happily immersed in
helping you.
I've thought of Richard as a uniquely sharing zealot who
drives the committee boat, sorts out diesels and builds mast
racks with twice the output of a Saturday work party. Then, on
a recent charter experience far away, I met his tool kit doppel-

ganger. They do have a similar gangly
look, but it is the glint in the eye and the
green handled Robertson they carry at all
times that made them twins.
James is the tech guy for Florida
Yachts Charters. I encountered him running at full bore down the dock to check
the GPS on our mother catamaran just
before we were to depart for the Straits of
Florida crossing. He ran pretty gracefully
considering he was carrying a heavy toolbox and a 12-volt battery. It might have
been alarming, but for the familiar grin.
He had the console spread open in
seconds, soldering irons glowing. And
like Richard, while in I'm-doing-it-now
mode he maintained a steady commentary on each step of the repair process
and an in-depth explanation of why it
was required, the voltaic principles that
govern it and the history of modern GPS.
Not long into the crossing, one of the boats in our flotilla
appeared to have low water volume exiting from the exhaust. "It
will overheat - must be the thermostat," James explained as he
hopped between boats in mid ocean carrying the tool kit and
spare parts bag.
He never returned. Oh no, he was safe, but spent the next
hours in the engine compartment of the catamaran, coming up
only occasionally to breathe and smile. As it turned out, he
wanted to disassemble and do a preventative check of the
serpentine belt, the water pump and impellor, examine the
hoses - you get the drift.
Apparently this type of particular technical crusader is more
common than I, a bumbling DIY-er at best, believed. It isn't just
fun, it is rapture. Delving into technological and scientific
nerdism while helping people fix their boats is bred into a very
select group of individuals. We are fortunate that their genes
line up to benefit us all. *
