British Virgin Islands US Virgin Islands have some incredible anchorages and beaches. Both are served by direct flights from the United States and one and two-stop flights from most major airports in Canada. British Virgin Islands The BVIs has long been one of the world's premiere sailing centres. The Moorings started on Tortola with 6 boats in 1969. Today there are dozens of companies operating in the BVI with hundreds of boats. Most of that came to a halt on September 6, 2017 when Category 5 Hurricane Irma hit the islands and the eye of the hurricane traveled over the three major islands in the group: Virgin Gorda, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. Over 4,000 homes (85%) were damaged and it took 6 months to completely restore electricity to the main island of Tortola. The charter fleets were decimated. Few could accommodate any of the bookings they had. But it did not take long to start rebuilding the fleets and the bases.
