Echo Spring 2021 - 55
By Dr. Peter W. Teague, President Emeritus
t is now over one year since I retired from the presidency of
Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School
after being an integral part of LBC | Capital since 1998 and in
Christian education for 47 years. People ask on certain occasions
if I miss it. Yes, in a way. Serving students in biblical higher education
is a great privilege.
But in all honesty, there is much to be said about retirement-especially
if you like to stay up late (9 p.m.!) and sleep in late (4 a.m.!) and like to
have plenty of time for reading, writing and taking spontaneous trips
with your grandchildren.
Every so often, however, I wish I could go back to campus and mingle
with students. I miss their sincere searching for truth and their inquiring
hearts and minds. I often find myself giving imaginary and encouraging
lectures to students. My latest goes something like this:
The story is told of the old farmer decked out in biboveralls
who was asked to give the blessing at a men's
breakfast in a rural community.
" Lord, I hate buttermilk, " he began. Louder
he proclaimed, " Lord, I hate lard. " The farmer
continued, " And Lord, you know how much I
don't care for raw white flour. "
Then he added, " But Lord, when you mix
them all together and bake them, I do love
warm fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things
come up that we don't like, when life gets
hard, when we don't understand what
you are saying to us, help us to just relax
and wait until you are done mixing. It will
probably be even better than biscuits. "
Amen!
Within this prayer is great wisdom
when it comes to complicated and
oftentimes unexplainable situations
we are experiencing in the world
today. Stay strong, my student
friends, and take every advantage
your LBC | Capital experience offers,
because our Lord is mixing several
things we don't really care for, but
something even better is going
to come when He is done with it!
And who knows how the Lord will
use all your experiences to help
you accomplish His purpose, just
as He is in the lives of so many
alumni whose stories we read
in this issue of The ECHO!
