Echo Spring 2023 - 42

Seven sports saw action this spring, and several Lancaster Bible College
squads experienced team highs and exciting finishes. Check out this roundup
from the 2023 spring season.
MEN'S TENNIS
Men's tennis won a program-record 14 matches this season and added a 3-2
record in the United East to secure the No. 3 seed. The Chargers suffered a
tight loss to end the regular season against Penn State Harrisburg, but the
team came back swinging with a 5-3 victory in the United East semifinal
playoff match. Unfortunately, the Chargers could not overcome Saint Mary's
College of Maryland in the United East Championship, but overall, it was a
highly successful and record-smashing season for the Chargers.
AJ Kwiatkowski ('23) now holds the all-time record for most singles wins
after chalking up 13 in his senior season. Kwiatkowski and Andrew Moore
('23) earned spots on the United East All-Conference First Team, while
doubles partners Josh Jarvis ('25) and Devon Clemmer ('23) were named
to the All-Conference First Team for doubles and Second Team for singles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Women's tennis finished the season 7-12, but thanks to a 3-2 conference
record and a mid-season four-game win streak that included several
conference victories, the team was able to clinch a spot in the United East
playoffs. The three-seeded Chargers fell to two-seeded Penn State Harrisburg
in the United East semifinals. Despite the season ending sooner than hoped,
the Chargers landed five players on All-Conference teams and show a bright
future.
Sarah Steckbeck ('26) earned her spot on the First Team after going 5-0 in
singles matches within the conference. Doubles pair Natalie Hoover ('26)
and Camryn Burkholder ('25) were also named to the All-Conference First
Team. Jania Weist ('26), Alycia Eglauer ('24), Hoover and Burkholder were
named to the All-Conference Second Team, placing third, fourth, fifth and
sixth for singles, respectively.
MEN'S GOLF
The 2023 golf squad tied for fifth in the United East Championships with a
total team score of 638. Leading the Chargers was Jake Rotelle ('26), shooting
a 75 in the first round and breaking a program record with a 71 in the second
round. Because of his outstanding performance and a third-best score in the
tournament, Rotelle was named the United East Rookie of the Year and made
the All-Conference First Team. Brock Monk ('23) also had a successful outing
in the championships with a total score of 159. The team looks to carry this
success into next season under new Head Coach Rob Rowe, (see page 45).
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
This spring, the men's volleyball team saw one of its best seasons in program
history. The Chargers posted a 21-10 record including a perfect 6-0 in the
Colonial States Athletic Conference. The squad cruised to sweep both Wilson
College in the CSAC semifinal match and Cairn University in the CSAC
Championship to claim the title of CSAC champions-the first in program
history.
Christian Herr ('26) was named the 2023 CSAC Championship Most Valuable
Player behind his 35-assist performance. The Chargers continued their
success in the individual awards as well, with Head Coach Jade Brubaker
honored with the CSAC Coach of the Year and Elijah Herb ('23) named CSAC
Player of the Year after his record-breaking 378-kill season, the third-most in
program history. Hunter Davis ('23) also earned CSAC Defensive Player of
the Year and All-Conference First Team honors for his 102 blocks, with
Tanner Shertzer ('23) and Herr also winning First Team spots. Dawson
Forney ('25) earned Second Team honors and Jake Rotelle ('26) received
an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Overall, the team established great
success in its inaugural season in the CSAC.
