Echo Spring 2023 - 51
By Dr. Peter W. Teague, President Emeritus
he seemingly endless digital explosion of
information, comfort, communication and
individual autonomy increases the complexity
of our world at a dizzying pace! We are
amassing and communicating incredible quantities
of data, but I often wonder where in all of this is
wisdom that transforms us with peace, justice and
love?!
The Scripture reminds us that we may gain the
whole world of knowledge but in the process lose
our soul (Mark 8:36). The task of Lancaster Bible
College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School is
to establish a context, purpose and direction for
knowledge-to translate knowledge into wisdom
by locating all knowledge within God's purposes
for creation.
Thus, LBC is both profoundly conservative
and traditional, for all students studying here
are introduced to this great text, the Bible, as a
normative and not incidental document. We are
also profoundly radical-for the Word of God
constantly pushes us beyond complacency, selfrighteousness
and self-satisfaction into a world of
injustice, conflict and brokenness.
As a great teacher and as the model for all LBC
professors, Jesus not only taught His students, but
He gave Himself to His students to the point of His
own death. Our professors may not go that far, but
they do believe teaching is more than lecturing; it
is a way of life.
We who serve here at LBC are convinced by the
power of God's Word that when the transforming
vision of the biblical story is taught effectively by
transformed professors, the likely result will be the
transformation of a multitude of students whose
minds, hearts and lives will never be the same
again!
As we live in community, teaching and learning on
campus and online, we do so with the prayer used
by John Calvin before each and every one of his
exegetical lectures:
May the Lord grant that we may engage in the
contemplation of the mysteries of God's heavenly
wisdom with ever increasing devotion to God's
glory and our edification. Amen.
When that prayer is increasingly answered in all of
our lives, we will experience teaching, learning and
knowing at its finest!
