Rev. Hinton Harmon Harris Jr. (WBC '52),
86, passed away peacefully on Jan. 15, 2024.
Hinton met his wife, Barbara Jean, at Newman
College. After serving as an associate pastor and
music director at Emmanuel Baptist Church in
Riverdale, Ga., Hinton and Barbara joined First
Baptist Church of Jonesboro. At FBC, Hinton
contributed to Pastoral Care Ministry for 18
years, although most will remember him for his
hospital and nursing home visits and assistance
with funerals. Hinton's true passion was in
missions and sharing the gospel, participating in
numerous mission trips in North America, Cuba
and Ukraine. He is survived by his son, three
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren and two siblings.
Erma (Baker '59) Westblade, 95, a McClure,
Pa., native, passed away on March 22, 2024, in
Salina, Kan. She obtained a three-year missions
degree from Lancaster School of the Bible
and was assigned as a religious advisor to Fort
Riley (Kan.) Army dependents. She married her
husband, Wayne, in 1965, then embarked on
many career paths as a farmer, cook, caterer
and finally as a legal secretary in Wayne's law
firm while raising her children and volunteering
for church and scouting organizations. In
addition to Wayne, she is survived by two
daughters, three granddaughters, two greatgranddaughters
and two sisters, as well as
many extended family members.
Paul David Kemp Sr. (WBC '62), 89, of Ranson,
W.Va., passed away Dec. 7, 2023. He was
an employee of Cives Steel Corporation in
Winchester with 25 years of service. His sole
ambition in life was to please his Lord and
Savior. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Helen, in 2017, seven sisters and two brothers.
Paul is survived by one daughter, two sons, four
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Daniel C. Freeland (WBC '78), 85, of
Christiansburg, Va., died on Feb. 24, 2024. He
served in the U.S. Navy for nine years as a
music instructor, during which time he met and
married his wife of 63 years, Diana. He pursued
his faith by studying at Washington Bible College
and serving in various churches, including one
in Spain. Daniel had diverse interests, including
Bible study and teaching, music, photography,
fishing and technology. In addition to his wife,
surviving family members include two children,
their spouses, grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
Barbara
Anne Woodard (WBC '80), 65, known
as " Barb " or " Barbie, " passed away unexpectedly
on Jan. 18, 2024. Barb was married to her
husband, Leland, since 1980. She loved to
plan social gatherings, where she utilized her
cooking and baking skills. The holidays were
her favorite time of the year. She and her
grandchildren would make a variety of cookies
for people at church, neighbors, and doctors
and nurses. Barb also loved her fellow church
ladies and enjoyed spending time with them
at outings, Sunday School and various church
events. Besides Leland, she is survived by two
children, five grandchildren and other beloved
family members.
Mark B. Boll ('91), 82, of Manheim, Pa., went
home to be with his Savior on Feb. 26, 2024.

Mark was the loving husband of Roseanna, and
they would have observed their 60th wedding
anniversary in June 2024. Mark pastored the
Hess Mennonite Church for 11 years and was
one of the founding members of Lititz Area
Mennonite School (LAMS), serving on the school
board for many years. Mark and Roseanna, who
survives, enjoyed spending time at their cabin in
Columbia County with friends and family. He is
also survived by two daughters, a twin sister and
two brothers.
William " Doug " Hoey (WBC '92), 82, passed
away on Jan. 14, 2024. Doug was a member of
Calvary Bible Church in Mount Joy, Pa. For most
of his life, he served the Lord as a jail and prison
chaplain. Doug was the loving husband of
Theona " Toni, " who survives. He is also survived
by a daughter, a son, three grandchildren, five
great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law.
Michael E. Schlossman ('97), 68, formerly of
Mountville, Pa., passed away Nov. 14, 2023, at
Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy.
He was the husband of Peggy, with whom he
celebrated 44 years of marriage in June 2023.
Mike worked in graphic arts for Intelligencer
Printing for 38 years before his retirement. A
member of LCBC Church, he is survived by his
wife, two daughters, one grandson and two
nephews.
Garrett Earl Deane Jr. ('03 & '22), 71, of
Monkton, Md., died on Dec. 29, 2023. Gary
was a man of strong faith, serving others as a
gospel warrior. He was a dedicated member
of Christ Fellowship Church and found solace,
guidance and fulfillment in his faith community
and friends. Gary had a zest for life and indulged
in various hobbies. He loved music, spending
time with his family, gardening, watching Fox
News and engaging in lively conversations.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, his
daughters and grandchildren.
Ricardo Carnell Ransom (attended 2007-11)
passed away on Feb. 13, 2024. Ricardo found
his greatest passion in serving the Lord and His
people. Most recently, he worshipped at the
Bethel Deliverance Outreach Ministries. One
of the last projects Ricardo worked on was
customizing his 2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0.
Ricardo leaves behind his wife, Karen, a son,
grandchildren and many other family members.
Sue Steffy ('11), 65, entered her heavenly home
on Feb. 28, 2024. Sue found purpose in her
community as an active member of Calvary
Church. An advocate of the arts, Sue's spirit
soared on the stage, a beacon of creativity and
passion that illuminated every production she
graced. She was deeply involved in various
community organizations and activities,
demonstrating her commitment to serving
others and making a difference. She leaves
behind her devoted husband, Scott, and their
children, as well as her mother and other
beloved family members.
Fannie L. Jackson ('15), 98, of Philadelphia, died
Feb. 21, 2024. As a dedicated advocate for the
blind after being blinded in an accident at the
age of 15, Fannie created a remarkable life in
the garment industry, childcare, social services
and religion. She volunteered for decades as a
peer counselor for the blind, especially women,
and was active with paratransit services, the
Arc social services organization, Women in
Transition and other service groups. She gave
Bibles as presents, quoted Scripture often and
worshipped most recently at the True Gospel
Tabernacle Family Church. She graduated from
LBC | Capital with her bachelor's degree in
Biblical Studies at the age of 89. In addition to
nieces and nephews, Fannie is survived by a
sister and other relatives.
Rev. John A. " Jack " Harpold ('19), 83, was
ushered into heaven on Nov. 25, 2023 while
surrounded by family. John was married to
Doris R. Harpold for 53 years prior to her passing
in 2013. John married Judy Royer Hostetter
in 2017. He served in 10 churches over the
span of his lifetime. John enjoyed studying the
Bible, reading, working outdoors, building and
repairing things. He is survived by his wife, three
sons, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren
and many beloved foster family members.
Philip " Phil " Nathaniel Courtney, 37, of
Eldersburg went to be with the Lord on Feb. 8,
2024. Phil was currently enrolled at Lancaster
Bible College and pursuing a Master of Arts
in Biblical Studies at the time of his passing.
He was the beloved and devoted husband of
Jessica Renee for 14 years. Phil was a veteran
of the U.S. Air Force, serving in active duty with
two deployments. He was a strong man of God
and loved his family and friends endlessly. He
enjoyed running and working out, and was
also talented in music, recently learning to play
the guitar. Phil was a Star Wars enthusiast and
enjoyed reading. Besides his wife, he is survived
by his children, father, stepmother, siblings and
many other beloved family members.

Dr. William B. McIlwaine,
100, went home to
be with the Lord on
Feb. 13, 2024. Born in
Massachusetts, he married
Melva Seymour in 1950,
and they were married
for nearly 59 years before
she passed away in
2009. After graduating
from high school, Bill joined Patton's 3rd Army
and was assigned to the 80th Infantry. He
saw action in at least three major World War
II battles, including the Battle of the Bulge,
receiving several commendations for his service.
After the war, he attended Boston University,
then began teaching geology and chemistry
at Millersville State Teachers College, now
Millersville University, in 1958. He later served as
the first chairperson of the Department of Earth
and Space Science and chaired the Department
of Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
Dr. McIlwaine retired from Millersville in 1991
but remained involved by serving on the Board
of Trustees for over 20 years. Due to Bill and
Melva's love of music and support of the values
of Lancaster Bible College, they established the
McIlwaine Guest Artist Series, the McIlwaine
Music Performance, the McIlwaine Scholar
