ne of my greatest joys in the past few years has been to teach the first course for
each new cohort in our Uganda Pastors Discipleship Network MA in Contextual
Ministry Program. The specific course I teach is Biblical Narrative, which gives a survey
of the entire biblical history. It was developed for our Lancaster and Capital Seminary
locations, but it was put together in such a way that it has proved adaptable enough to
speak to the needs of African students. God has also used my experience as a missionary
in South Africa to give me insight into the issues that most sub-Saharan African churches
confront, such as the Prosperity Gospel, the rise of Islam and the issue of syncretism related
to ancestor veneration or worship.
The main benefit of having this course first in the program is that it gives the students the
big picture of the narrative of the Scriptures, thus helping to shape their worldview. It also
leads to the students understanding the importance of context when teaching or preaching
a biblical text. Most of the students are already actively involved in presenting God's Word
in various types of ministry, and many have commented on how their presentations of
the Scriptures have improved in that they are now true to the intent of the original biblical
authors. This has led them to more fully teach God's Word in spirit and in truth.
