ust before Thanksgiving, the United East
conference announced members of the
fall sports all-sportsmanship teams, with
five Chargers being named to the various
teams. Previously in the fall, the Colonial
States Athletic Conference announced its allsportsmanship
teams, with one field hockey
player earning the honor.
Men's cross country was represented by Alex
McWilliams ('24). McWilliams worked extremely
hard during the 2021 season, seeing constant
improvement. One of his best performances
came in the United East Championship Meet,
where he finished the 8K race in a time of
31:46.8. McWilliams improved by over minute
from his time earlier in the season on the
same course.
" When I think of a man who is a true
ambassador for a sport he loves, my mind's
first stop is Alex, " said Head Coach Katy Brake
('09). " Our men's cross country team is blessed
with men of character who display great
sportsmanship, respectfulness and care for their
team and those they come in contact with. I
have seen Alex take time out of his schedule to
assist others and offer words of encouragement
when needed. "
Phoebe Clemens ('24) represented cross
country on the women's side. Clemens stepped
up to join the Chargers after being a member of
the softball team last season, giving the squad
valuable depth. Clemens always ran with a huge
smile on her race, and she progressed with each
meet. At the conference championship meet,
Clemens finished 34th overall with a time of
33:40.2.
" When the women's team needed another
member to compete, Phoebe was the one who
responded she would help, " said Brake. " Phoebe
came to cross country as a true novice but
embraced the community of the sport. She
wanted to help in any way she could despite
not running more than around the softball field
for training. She embraced the new challenge,
and her positive attitude was noticed by many. "
Clark Shreiner ('23) was the all-sportsmanship
team member from men's soccer. He grew into
a leadership role on and off the field, helping
his team reach new heights. He scored six
goals for the Chargers, including a tremendous
outing during the Homecoming matchup with
Berkeley where Shreiner scored three goals.
" Clark is a strong presence on the field, yet
he competes fairly and has consistently
demonstrated good sportsmanship in his time
so far with our program, " said Head Coach Tom
Ardt. " He is hungry to win, while at the same
time displaying humility on the field. "
Megan Rogers ('22) represented women's
soccer on the all-sportsmanship team. She
was an asset to the Chargers' attack all season,
playing at the forward position. Rogers created
space for her teammates to generate offense,
and off the field, she was a leader, pushing
players to do their best in practice every day.
" I can't say enough about Megan's contributions
to our team, " said Head Coach Jake Warren.
" She is respected and loved by her teammates
and coaches and will be greatly missed next
season. Megan has been an important player for
this team on the field but equally valuable in her
leadership qualities and relational impact. "
The women's volleyball all-sportsmanship
team representative was Maelynne Patey ('22).
She had battled through injuries throughout
her career, including during her senior season.
But Patey never let those issues affect her,
constantly working hard to help her teammates
improve. During games, Patey usually had a
clipboard in hand, recording stats to help the
coaching staff make in-game adjustments.
" Mae is the ultimate team player, " said Head
Coach Julie Brubaker. " She has seen many
injuries in her career and still makes the team a
priority. She also gives 100%-100% of the time-
in practice and games. This was her senior year,
and she had some setbacks, but she stayed true
to the team and always gave of herself in any
role she was given. She was a great example to
us all as she persevered through adversity and
disappointment. "
Kayla Willing ('25) earned a spot on the CSAC
All-Sportsmanship Team, as she exemplified
sportsmanship on the field and a passion for
field hockey off the field as well. On the field,
Willing started every game, scoring one goal
and dishing an assist.
" Kayla embodies sportsmanship, " said Head
Coach Becky Elliott. " She is always positive, a
constant encourager to her teammates and
coaches, is one of the first to fire up the team
after an opponent's goal and comes to practice
with a willingness and drive to work hard. Kayla
also sacrifices her own desires to play whatever
position. This fall she played midfield, forward
and defense and never once complained. She
embraced whatever position and worked hard
to do her best in those positions. "
Added Interim Director of Athletics Rod
Baughman, " I am so grateful to these studentathletes
for taking the lead in demonstrating the
type of care and respect each of our programs
set out to show to those we are competing
with. It is exciting to see the way they care for
others on the fields and courts as well as among
our campus community. And I'm thankful for a
team of coaches that values the characteristics
embodied in these awards. "
