Transitions in the public school
realm and at the college level are
advancing and refining the area's
educational offerings.
The educational world is constantly changing to
meet the times, and nowhere is that truer, or more
successful, than in the Alleghany Highlands.
For decades, the Highlands has been home
to both Alleghany County Public Schools and
Covington City Public Schools. While each of
these systems have long been successful on their
own and enjoyed a friendly cross-town rivalry,
they will merge on July 1, 2022, to better serve
the educational needs of their communities.
In a plan that enjoyed support of all the local

governing bodies and the Virginia Board of
Education, the two systems will form Alleghany
Highlands Public Schools, an organization that
serves students in the City of Covington and
Alleghany County alike.
It's an idea that has long had its roots in the
Jackson River Technical Center, a vocational
school that has been jointly operated by the
two systems for decades. Students from both
Alleghany County and Covington have enjoyed
a wide variety of occupational opportunities.
