The responsive classroom model teaches students to be
responsible for not only their learning but for creating
a safe and respectful classroom environment, which
goes hand-in-hand with the division's goal of valuing
the unique characteristics and needs of every student.
Mountain Gateway Community College
(DSLCC)
became an instant success in the classroom, and it
was an early preview of how well educators from
two systems will come together as one in 2022.
The library's partnership with schools in the
Highlands doesn't end with videos. Every student
in the Alleghany Highlands is provided with
a digital library card that grants access to the
library's online catalog, databases and streaming
services, all free of charge. This partnership-
another best practice that will remain in place
after the merger-was also sparked by the
pandemic and the switch to online learning that
continued through 2021.
It was this kind of community support,
coupled with the hard work of students and
teachers, that resulted in Alleghany County
Public Schools tallying the highest gains in
standardized test scores in all of Virginia's school
divisions. Alleghany High School outpaced
average statewide math scores by 10 percent,
both of which are extraordinary achievements in
unprecedented times.

Home to historic Covington High School,
Edgemont Primary School and Jeter-Watson
Intermediate School, Covington City Public
Schools has continued to build upon the
responsive classroom model that is ideally suited
to the division's small-town feel.
The responsive classroom model teaches
students to be responsible for not only their
learning but for creating a safe and respectful
classroom environment, which goes hand-in-hand
with the division's goal of valuing the unique
characteristics and needs of every student. This
approach is modeled by the faculty and staff of
Covington City Schools, who partnered with the
Alleghany Highlands Regional Library to launch
the library's summer reading program in the
classroom and create an online learning database
through the " Learn A Lot In A Little " initiative
founded by the library.
The Clifton Forge Public Library continues
to serve as a cornerstone of the town of Clifton
Forge even as the pandemic made access to the
2022 Alleghany Living Guide
