2023 Lexington Vacation Guide - 9
community, including First Baptist
Church of Lexington with its soaring
white steeple.
Historic homes abound in
downtown Lexington, and many
are on the National Register of
Historic Places. Near the Visitor
Center is the Jackson House
Museum (ca. 1800), the one-time
home of educator and general
Thomas J. Jackson, and the local
hospital from 1907 to 1954. Today
it shares the history of the whole
Jackson household, including the
enslaved, prior to the American
Civil War.
Perhaps the area's natural
beauty is to thank for the overflowing
creativity of Lexington's
residents. Galleries such as
Artists in Cahoots, Nelson Fine
Art Gallery, Cabell Gallery and
Earth, Fire & Spirit Pottery display
and sell impressive works of
art spanning a plethora of media
and genres. The likeness of the
iconic Lexington bricks are cast as
jewelry while House Mountain is
a prominent subject for paintings
and photography.
Unique gifts are all the rage at
our boutiques. Laugh out loud
with a fun find at Pumpkinseeds
or let a bit of nostalgia wash over
you at Sugar Maple Trading
Company or Shenandoah Attic
& Victorian Parlor.
Make a fashion statement with
a new piece from Clover Boutique,
Pappagallo, or Alvin-Dennis;
or pick up the supplies to
knit yourself a new sweater at
House Mountain Yarn Co.
Young and old alike will love a
visit to Tommy's Arcade and you
can pick up the latest novel at
WALKABOUT OUTFITTER
Downtown Books or find historical
subjects at The Historians
Books.
Gear up for outdoor adventures
at Walkabout Outfitter
and Lex Running Shop. With
their help, you will be ready to
pound the pavement, hike the
Appalachian Trail or paddle the
Upper James River Water Trail.
Don't forget to stock up for
a picnic with some wine and
snacks from Purveyors on Main
and some artisan cheese from
Cheese to You.
Re-purposed, refinished and
upcycled furnishings and décor
are in progress and available
to take home from Yesterday
Once More. Additional items for
the home are found at Ladles
& Linens, Old Lex Mercantile,
Chelsea Garden, Curated Interiors
and Lizzie's of Lexington.
Pick up a family board game at
Just Games or outfit your pet at
Lexington Pet Place.
Did you know Lexington was
founded by mostly Scots-Irish
immigrants traveling along the
Great Wagon Road? Celtic Tides
gives a nod to that history with
Scottish, Irish and British Isle
gifts such as kilts, jewelry, glassware,
apparel, and more.
The museums of Washington
and Lee University and Virginia
Military Institute share in telling
much of Lexington's history,
and a visit to downtown would
be incomplete without a stop on
campus.
Wander freely with a Walking
Tour Map from the Visitor Center
located at 106 E. Washington
Street, then expand your community
explorations to include
the stores and murals of Buena
Vista. Fill up on baking goods
at Coiner Country Store, grab
a sweet treat at Straws or The
BeeVe, then check out Flowers
& Things and Vinyl Cuts for
ladies' apparel, gifts, and home
decor.
The villages of Brownsburg
and Fairfield feature beautifully
preserved architecture and
warm hospitality to match. Head
to the Brownsburg Museum for
a deeper dive into more history.
A stop at The Quiltery or 3
Seasons Antiques in Fairfield is
an easy escape into the pleasantries
and practicalities of the
past.
