at large, and we've been fairly successful
at changing our ways to accommodate
that. "
Later Changes. During the pandemic,
adaptations helped businesses
and consumers navigate the challenges.
In 2020, Virginia ABC introduced curbside
pickup and home delivery services.
In 2021, ABC launched a new partnership
with DoorDash for spirits delivery.
" We were a participant in constructing
cocktails to go in the COVID era, "
says Curtis. " [This] has since become
part of state law, but it has a sunset
provision to make sure it isn't creating
unintended consequences. "
A more recent example, the commercial
lifestyle center, grants customers
the ability to carry alcoholic beverages
around large, licensed locales. At a
licensed mall, for example, an adult of
drinking age can purchase an alcoholic
beverage at a restaurant then tote the
drink around the mall.
Other changes make transactions
more convenient for licensees. In 2022,
ABC launched the Virginia ABC Licensing
(VAL) system, which enables licensees to
complete online transactions on behalf
of their business.
A champion of its own people. Job
hopping seems to have become the norm
in contemporary American society. Many
Virginia ABC employees, however, have
bucked that trend, often serving long
tenures in the organization.
For example, Chris Curtis, now deputy
secretary, began in 1975 as a parttime
clerk in Store 143 in South Hill.
He became a full-time ABC special agent
