Everybody loves a celebration. And Virginia
ABC is celebrating our 90th anniversary
this year!

Take a look back to when it all began on March
22, 1934, following the end of Prohibition on
December 5, 1933. Our story, A Toast to 90 Years,
includes interesting facts about Virginia ABC from
back in the day-for instance, we still carry more
than a dozen spirits that first appeared on our
shelves in 1934, including Johnny Walker Red,
Canadian Club and Bacardi Rum. And even 90
years later, we continue to put our customers first.
The weather outside might not be frightful everywhere in the commonwealth, but
you'll still find our cozy cocktails delightful. Hot drinks have been keeping us warm
for centuries, and we're sure you'll enjoy our Tequila Apple Cider or Spicy Rum Hot
Chocolate. Story with recipes begins on page 38.
If you're kicking off the new year by cutting back on calories, carbs and alcohol
consumption, we offer no-alcohol cocktail recipes that will make sipping responsibly
fun. Mix up a Roanoke Ritz, a Chesapeake Cooler or an Alexandria Apple Spice. And if
you need a refresher on blood alcohol content vs body weight, see page 44.
Astrology fans (and even skeptics) will find our cosmic cocktails amusing. Whether
you're an Aquarius, a Capricorn or fall under one of the other 10 signs, we
recommend a unique cocktail based on your zodiac sign. Story and recipes begin
on page 28.
Football fans will enjoy our hosting recommendations that pair spirits with NFL
teams. Turn to page 36 to see if your favorite team made the cut.
In our Employee Spotlight, we're pleased to recognize Avis Alexander, manager of
South Hill Store 143, who still looks forward to coming to work after 32 years with
us. See page 8.
In Behind The Bar, page 72, you'll meet Mederio Venable at The Bebedero in
Charlottesville. Discover how this top-notch bartender matches tequila and
mezcal cocktails with traditional Mexican cuisine.
About 175 miles southeast of Charlottesville, Chris Richeson has been distilling
vodka and other spirits for nearly 20 years at Chesapeake Bay Distillery in Virginia
Beach. Read more on page 10.
Lastly, we're pleased to welcome our 400th ABC store which opened a few
months ago in Lee County. Although this Jonesville store is the farthest from
ABC's headquarters and distribution center, it carries a core inventory just like
our other 399 stores.
