Classic and Historic American
Spirits
Seven ABC products have deep roots in
American history:
Applejack. Also known as apple brandy,

Cocktails originated right here on American soil-the first use of the word " cocktail "
and the first known cocktail recipes. These 13 patriotic cocktails, representing the
13 stripes of the American flag, will also please your palate and your guests. Let's
highlight each color first.
Red: Betsy Ross
This early seamstress was a friend of President
George Washington and his wife, Martha.
Betsy Ross is also said to have sewn the first
stars-and-stripes flag. She can't claim credit
for this 1940s cocktail, but her distiller friend,
George, would undoubtedly have approved.
1½ OZ BRANDY
1½ OZ RUBY PORT
½ OZ ORANGE CURAÇAO
2 DASHES ANGOSTURA BITTERS
Add ingredients to a mixing glass with
ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a
chilled cocktail glass.
applejack is the oldest American spirit made
from locally grown fruit. Laird & Company,
America's oldest distillery, started in New
Jersey in 1698. The family-owned company
moved production to Virginia, closer to
the state's delicious fresh apples.
Rum. Rum reigned in the American colonies
before the Revolutionary War, made
from molasses imported from Caribbean
sugar plantations. By 1770, more than 140
rum distilleries were scattered around the
colonies, mostly in the northeast.
Rye whiskey. Early rye whiskey predominated
in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern
states, especially Pennsylvania,
Maryland and New York. Farmer-immigrants
wanted to create whiskeys similar to
Old World spirits, and rye grew well in their
soil and climate. Old Overholt rye whiskey
was first produced by Abraham Overholt in
Pennsylvania in 1810 and has been made
and sold without interruption (it received
a permit to sell " medicinal whiskey " during
Prohibition). In the 1960s, Old Overholt
was the only nationally distributed straight
rye whiskey, but the spicy whiskey has
regained popularity in recent years.

White: The Rocks Colada
The Piña Colada is claimed by a hotel in the
U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, with three delicious
tropical tastes-coconut, pineapple
and rum. This recipe comes from Blue Chair
Bay, the creation of American country music
superstar Kenny Chesney.
2 OZ BLUE CHAIR BAY PREMIUM
WHITE RUM (40% ABV)
1 OZ CRÈME DE COCONUT
1 OZ HEAVY CREAM
6 OZ PINEAPPLE JUICE
Shake all ingredients together. Strain
into pineapple glass or hurricane glass.
Garnish with pineapple leaf.

Blue: Blue Hawaii
The Blue Hawaii was invented in
1957 in Waikiki, Hawaii - the 50th U.S. state -
and later became the title of a legendary Elvis
Presley movie. How American is that?!
1 OZ BLUE CURAÇAO
1 OZ CRÈME DE COCONUT
2 OZ PINEAPPLE JUICE
1 OZ WHITE RUM
CHERRY AND PINEAPPLE SLICE FOR
GARNISH
Combine ingredients in a blender with ice
until smooth. Pour contents into a highball
glass. Garnish.
