1½ OZ UNCLE NEAREST
STRAIGHT RYE (50% ABV)
¾ OZ FRESH LEMON JUICE
¾ OZ HONEY SYRUP (1:1)
LEMON WHEEL FOR GARNISH
Combine liquid ingredients
in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake until well chilled. Strain
into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
Garnish.
Named after Rudolph
Valentino's 1922
bullfighter movie, the
recipe first appeared in
the 1930 Savoy Cocktail
Book. Use blood orange
juice for a redder hue.

(JOHNNIE WALKER BLACK)
(40% ABV)
½ OZ HEERING CHERRY LIQUEUR
(24% ABV)
½ OZ SWEET VERMOUTH (ANTICA)
(16.5% ABV)
1 OZ ORANGE JUICE (FRESHLY
SQUEEZED)

Combine all ingredients with ice in
a shaker. Shake vigorously for 5 to 8
seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe
glass. Garnish.

it to the historic NOLA cocktail.
Moonshine. Prohibition didn't stop
some distillers from creating liquor, which
they often created in the still of the night,
hence the term " moonshine. " The whiskey
was illegal at the time, but contemporary
lawful distillers have embraced the term,
often for clear corn whiskey and an array
of flavored variants.
Classic American Cocktails
Sazerac. The classic cocktail's drink
has a foggy history, but all agree that it
arose from mid-19th century New Orleans.
Mint Julep. While some cocktail
researchers place the beginnings of the
Mint Julep in European medicine, the
name and reputation are inextricably
linked with America and, especially, the
Kentucky Derby.
Quoit Club Punch. A renowned
19th-century African American caterer
and bartender, Jasper Crouch, created
this drink in Richmond. The blend of
rum, brandy and Madeira satisfied Chief
Justice John Marshall and other Quoit
Club members during their recreational
ring-toss game.
Manhattan. This may well be the first

of Lynchburg, Tennessee, home of Jack
Daniel's distillery as well as the sensations
of " summer over ice " and Southern

1 OZ JACK DANIEL'S OLD NO. 7
(40% ABV)
1 OZ TRIPLE SEC
1 OZ SOUR MIX
4 OZ LEMON-LIME SODA
LEMON WEDGE FOR GARNISH
Fill a highball glass ¾ full with ice
cubes. Pour Old No. 7 over ice. Add
remaining ingredients and stir.
Garnish.

modern cocktail. This mix of whiskey,
vermouth and bitters first appeared in
print in the 1880s. Its origin story is up
for debate, but it does seem to have been
created somewhere in New York City.
Gin Rickey. This cocktail was supposedly
created using rye whiskey for Col.
Joseph Rickey. Variations were made with
whiskey, brandy and other liquors, too.
Stone Fence. This drink's heritage
arises from the raid of Fort Ticonderoga
at the beginning of the Revolutionary
War. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain
Boys imbibed a mix of rum and hard cider
before the raid.
Bloody Mary. This ubiquitous brunch
cocktail has an American origin story. It
started life as a non-alcoholic drink in
1892 (and still can be enjoyed as such). The
first addition of liquor might come from
actor George Jessel, who wanted vodka
in his Bloody Mary as his hair-of-the-dog
hangover cure in 1927.
