bought some land and built for us in
Jonesville. "
Virginia ABC owns 16 of its 400
stores, and the average lease on the other
stores is five years. In Jonesville, Susan
Johnson's longevity was important to
the process with the property.
" Susan's been with Virginia ABC for a
long time, " Burke says-since 1995- " so
the relationships that she's built over
the years get us a lot of opportunities
that we wouldn't get otherwise. "

years and brings a wealth of experience.
Although it might seem challenging
to find employees for new rural locations,
Burke says it's actually easier
than in cities.
" We don't have as much competition,
and in a lot of cases such as Jonesville,
we're the [best] opportunity in town if
they want to make decent money and
have a decent work-life balance. "
Often, too, when Virginia ABC opens
a rural store, someone working in a
nearby rural store lives closer to the
new store and transfers there.
Once the site has been procured,
the next step in preparing a store for
opening day is buildout and stocking.
Virginia ABC has an advantage here, too,
using decades of experience, networking
connections and data from hundreds of
other stores.
