CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
There's nothing quite like Virginia during the dog
days of summer. These punishingly hot, humid
days got their name from ancient Greek and Roman
civilizations' belief about Sirius, the brightest star in
the sky, but we know them as days when it's just too
uncomfortable for even the dog to be outside.
No worries! Virginia ABC has some cool relief. This issue
focuses on easy-to-make frozen concoctions like the
Mango Daiquiri pictured on the cover, a Watermelon
Mojito and a Mermaid Rum Punch. (See " Frozen
Delights " on page 20.)

If mixing a new beverage causes you to break into
a sweat, you'll appreciate our line of ready-to-drink
cocktails highlighted in " Pop Tops, Portables and Pre-Mixed " (page 38.) Discover more than
a dozen ready-to-drink cocktails that you can just pour over ice and enjoy. An extra bonus of
plastic bottles and single serving cans makes these products the perfect addition to an icefilled
cooler.
But if hot weather is your jam, then you can bring on the heat with our story on spicy spirits.
We've got the recipes for a Jalapeño Margarita, a Spicy Sazerac and more in " Red Hot Chile
Peppers " on page 42.
And speaking of hot, you'll find more than 80 new products and size extensions of existing hot
sellers on our shelves including 22 whiskeys, 13 cordials and seven tequilas, as well as mixers,
ready-to-drink cocktails and Virginia wines on page 3. Find a few new favorites.
Now is a good time to restock your summer bar, and our story on page 30 offers
recommendations on seasonal spirits.
Whiskey lovers will enjoy our recommendations on high-proof whiskeys that include barrelproof,
high-wheat bourbon from the Lost Whiskey Club and Belmont Farm's special reserve
bourbon that's aged for 10 years. Both products are made right here in Virginia.
Meet Stewart Shield, a long-time resident on the Eastern Shore, who manages our
Chincoteague store, in Spotlight on Service, and Ashley Schneider, who's been in the service
industry for nearly 20 years and now manages the bar at Roanoke's Sidecar restaurant, in
Behind the Bar.
I'm pleased to share that Governor Glenn Youngkin appointed Dale Farino as Virginia ABC's
new Chief Executive Officer. Following his service in the United States Marine Corps, Farino
worked for decades in the beverage industry. He brings a wealth of knowledge in HR, finance,
sales and operations among other areas to Virginia ABC, and I'm excited to have him join our
ABC team.
