ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY Don't Miss Devil's Marbleyard rock formation: This great 3.3-mile out-andback winds through the 8,907-acre James River Face Wilderness to a gigantic, scalable boulder slide. Park in the namesake gravel lot by East Fork Elk Creek then proceed through mature oak forests to the slide. Rock-scramble or take the go-around trail to a 2,500foot summit and panoramic westward views. To get there, take Va. 781 at the Petites Gap access and drive DEVIL'S MARBLEYARD I OFF BRP AT MP 63.9 DID YOU Rockbridge County's 7-mile Chessie rail-totrail starts in downtown Lexington near 10-acre Jordan's Point Park and ends in downtown Buena Vista. The route is smooth and mostly flat, and passes through deep woods and pastures as it parallels the Maury River. Highlights include restored 19th-century stone canal locks and walls of high rocky cliffs that tower over the river. THE HOPPY HIKER northwest for about five miles. Visit Lexington: Founded before the Revolutionary War, the 7,300-person town of Lexington is filled with colonial and 19th-century architecture and is home to two prominent universities. Stay downtown in the marvelously overhauled historic Gin Hotel. The 39-room boutique retains much of its 1926 Art Deco decor and is equipped with an excellent cocktail lounge and restaurant. The nearby Bistro on Main dishes out solid Southern staples like shrimp and grits paired with local beer and wine in a casual-upscale setting.
