I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU
Shelby Miller had just finished graduate school and
started her new job at Virginia Tech in the athletics
department when a colleague connected her with
Derek Gwinn. The two became roommates and
coworkers, and eventually good friends; almost a
year later, a fun " friends " weekend sparked their
forever romance.
For Derek's proposal, he took advantage of a
friend's surprise birthday celebration on a group
cruise. While at port in Key West, their group
walked to the beach; everyone except the couple
was handed photos, and Derek took that moment
to propose. The photos their friends held? Shelby's
family and friends from afar, holding up their
own signs that said, " Say yes! "

SOMEONE TO FACE THE DAY WITH
Shelby wanted a classic day with subtle colors
and a simple, elegant look. She chose neutrals
and greenery with pops of dark red and navy;
her maid of honor dyed Shelby's veil, which was
her mother's, and attached lace edging.
Shelby says that most people don't realize
Derek studied music in college. He couldn't
resist performing at his own wedding, working
with one of her bridesmaids to produce a special
version of the theme song from her favorite show,
" FRIENDS. " He started out the popular song as
a slow ballad that ended with the entire bridal
party opening up the dance floor and inviting
guests to kick off the party. " 'I'll be there for you'
is no cliche when it comes to Derek! " Shelby says.
'CAUSE YOU'RE THERE FOR ME TOO
Thanks to the pandemic, the couple had to
plan and re-plan several times. But Shelby,
an event planner, had a personal connection
to her vendors, and knew every detail would
be special, especially with friends and family
to help with decor, cupcakes and more. They
hosted the wedding at Blacksburg Country Club,
plus Friday night's rehearsal dinner and social
hour, making things as stress-free as possible!
" What got us through the stress and unknown
was that no matter what, we would be Mr. and
Mrs. Gwinn, " Shelby says. " The chaos of planning
a wedding during a pandemic actually centered
us on the ultimate reason behind a wedding...
the beginning of a marriage. "
