Delights for
the Warm Months
The antecedents of the sangrias we enjoy today reach
back some 3,000 years, when the wine punch served as
" the Gatorade of its day. "
S
angria is trending again, as it does
every 15 or 20 years, and it's the perfect
refresher for those hot summer days. It's
sweet, cold, fruity, easy to make and can be
readily adapted to any taste or variation. Sangria
is a simple punch typically made with red wine,
chopped fruit and spices.
Where does sangria come from? Well, both
the Spanish and Portuguese claim the drink as
their own, but no one knows for certain where
it was first made. What we do know is that it
originated somewhere in Southern Europe
during classical times. Starting around 3,000

years ago, Greeks and Romans started adding
sugar, herbs and spices to their wine. Cinnamon,
clove and cardamom were especially popular.
The resulting cocktail was called hippocras and
it was sometimes heated, as we do today with
mulled wine. Thus, hippocras is the ancestor of
both sangria and mulled wine. The people of
the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and
Portugal) were making similar beverages from
the grapevines planted by the Phoenicians.
