they don't cut you off from their friendship. "
They've had neighbors, like one in their
building, steer them in the right direction
when they faced all the necessary changes
such a move brings-finding new doctors,
new dentists, new insurance agents,
new veterinarian, etc.
They also tested out the hospital system
when Susan had to go to the emergency
room for a broken arm. As unfortunate
as that was, it also gave them
reassurance that they were in a place with
excellent medical care.
" As people age, healthcare is important, "
says Susan. " We're extremely happy with
our doctors and dentists and the Eastern
Carolina hospital system. We also know if
something major comes up, Duke and Raleigh
are just a couple hours away. "
It's an interesting parallel they describe
of a town that affords luxurious leisure and
carefree days in the midst of a lot of activity.
They both enjoy volunteering. David is
on the board of SkySail and Susan spends
time tutoring for the Craven County Literacy
Council as well as playing bridge and
spending time with her book club.
David was especially excited to learn
about a woodworking business in town
that allows customers to use the tools by
the hour, week or month. " It allowed me
to pass my tools to a friend, " says David.
" He can still be creative and build, " says
Susan. " He's going to build me a chest, or
so he says. "
" When my parents retired, they had a
house overlooking a river. They had peace
and quiet and beautiful sunrises, but they
didn't have activity, " explains David. " They
had to drive 30 minutes to get into town.
Here we have activity at all times. "
" We like to hear the clock chime at
noon, " adds Susan. " We can hear all
three-the Episcopal Church, City Hall and
the Baptist Church. We have a cool theatre
downtown-the New Bern Civic Theatre.
One of the first times we came here
we drove into town and the streets were
blocked off. Restaurants put tables on the
street. There were games and a concert at
Union Point Park. We walked down and I
said to David, 'I love this place.' "
