Retire VA 22 - 34
Settling into a
Comfortable Retirement
written by Dan Smith If the planning goes right, retirement can be an immensely satisfying time of life.
Annie and Daniel Johnson
at their 1776-era home in
Roanoke County.
R
etirement can be imposing
from a number of angles.
It can also be a welcome
new beginning, one where
long-delayed goals and
avocations can be pursued.
Financial planning is part of process
and doing it successfully pretty well
ensures that the other elements can
fall into place. Andy Hudick of Fee-Only
Financial Planning in Roanoke says to ask
yourself some questions:
What do I need to know to prepare
for retirement if I am not married?
Household answer is the same for a single

or a married person.
What is my monthly income need?
Where will I derive that monthly
income?
Do I have health insurance coverage in
place?
Do I have an emergency fund (slush
fund in case of an unanticipated expense
outside of the monthly income need)?
" Cash flow concerns are the primary
concern for many retirees, " says Hudick.
" Most folks have higher income levels
during gainful employment years than
during retirement. The big concern is
how do you manage your lifestyle when
you convert 'person at work' to 'money
at work' by using savings and pension
and the Social Security system to your
benefit. "
We talked to some retirees in this
region and they have different success
stories that have led to satisfying
retirements.
Ellen Darden, 64, has been retired
for two years from Concord University
as a professor of social work. Husband
Steve, 66, is still working as the lead
special education teacher at Blacksburg
High, coordinating the special education
program.
