Volunteering at a community garden is an excellent way to stay active and help out your
neighbors.
organizations, like the Salvation
Army, even offer home pick-up
services. Little Free Libraries are set
up throughout the region for all of
your book donating needs.
Non-perishable foods and hygiene
items can be placed in the Little
Free Pantries scattered throughout
Roanoke. Five of these have been
established by United Way of
Roanoke Valley. This organization,
in partnership with CHIP of Roanoke
Valley, also provides opportunities
for folks to give back to their
community by having volunteers
assist with their birthday boxes and
postpartum kit programs.
BE YOUR COMMUNITY'S
BIGGEST CHEERLEADER
Sometimes it's the tiniest of gestures
that can make the biggest difference.
Consider lifting your neighbors up by
patronizing their businesses, leaving
a generous tip for a server at a local
restaurant, complimenting others for
a job well done or even taking the
time to chat with people who look
like they're having a rough day. While
these are simple ways to give back,
showing a little extra kindness truly
does go a long way.
Whether looking for a new passion
after a decades-long career or
just hoping to positively impact
those around you, our region is
brimming with opportunities for
retirees to make their mark on their
community. All that's really needed is
a little reflection about what you're
passionate about and a willingness
