Q: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO
TRAIN A DOG?
Dogs are not mind readers! They do not
know what we want them to do, so it is
our responsibility to teach them. Learning
should feel safe and enjoyable, so our
dogs like working with us. Positive reinforcement
is a science-based method of
teaching which involves reinforcing behaviors.
When a dog demonstrates a desired
behavior, we reinforce that behavior with
something that the dog views as good -
a treat, a toy, a belly rub, etc. Instead of
simply punishing a behavior we do not like,
we teach our dog what we want him or
her to do instead. This way, learning is fun
and helps us bond with our dogs. Training
methods that rely on inflicting pain or
discomfort should not be used. Take the
time to teach your dog the proper, humane
way. It works!

Q: HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY DOG'S FIRST
OVERNIGHT STAY AT THE RESORT?
* Make sure your pet has all their required vaccinations
in enough time for vaccines to be effective. We require
Bordetella, Da2pp and Rabies. If your dog or puppy
is receiving this vaccination for the first time we like
them to be given two weeks prior to check-in and if
vaccinations have expired recently and just updated
48 hours prior to check-in.
* Book a day of doggie daycare to allow your pup to
see this is not a kennel and reassure them that you
may leave them to play but you always return to take
them home.
* Bring their exact meal plan diet that they are on at
home.
* Bring special blankets, toys or other items with the
scent of home to stay in their suite.
* Check in the AM when staying for the first time to get
a full day of play and snuggles with our team, allowing
time to adjust to their new environment before
nighttime.

Little Ponderosa Pet Resort

minutes from Halesford Bridge
at Smith Mountain Lake. We
are a five-star resort for your
pawed family members. Our
five acres and fenced off yards
allow all size dogs plenty of
room to run and our beautiful

Our experienced staff is patient
and resourceful as they address
everything from puppy to therapy
dog training. We also provide
behavioral training for dogs
that have issues needing to be
addressed. We are teachers of
canines and their people, as we
aim for well-mannered dogs with
compassionate human partners.

We offer private lessons
conducted not only at our
clients' homes, but also at
our new 2700 sq ft training
center. Our group classes
are held at our training
center and are offered on
weeknights and Saturdays.
As we continue to grow,
daytime classes during the
week may be added.
