How did chocolatepaper get its start, you ask?
The lead story in the evening edition of the Roanoke Times & World News on November
5, 1985 opened with " The Flood of 85 washed away Mark Burkett's dream. " As a business
banker, Mark Burkett bravely jumped into his first entrepreneurial adventure: a greeting
card store in the newly renovated City Market building in September of 1985. Weeks later,
that dream was literally underwater and Mark found his way to Richmond to start again.
" Mongrel " celebrates 32 years of success in CaryTown.
Bringing a bigger vision back to Roanoke with the addition of chocolates to the gift and
greeting card formula, Mark and Richmond business partner, Stan McCulloch, along with
Mark's nephew, Matt Burkett, and niece, Melissa Mays, created chocolatepaper.
Celebrating 17 years in June, chocolatepaper has become a mainstay on the Roanoke City
Market. With items ranging from delectable to eclectic, the store has become part of the
fabric that is Roanoke, not simply as a retail entity, but as a community partner. Matt and
Melissa run the store now with a team of amazing employees-turned-family.
While winning countless awards over the years, being voted by readers means our WinWin
mission is making an impact far beyond the walls of this small, family, brick-andmortar
business in Downtown Roanoke, and we say thank you from the bottom of our
