Getting EU consumers on board
Integrating consumer expectations into the supply chain

Today from 13:00 to 14:00

C

onsumers play a key role in the
future development of the market
for fishery and aquaculture
products. As global competition
intensifies, companies are increasingly
looking to boost their market share and
consumer loyalty by stepping up their
investment in innovation and product
information. Yet many of the complex
factors driving consumers' choices and
behaviour remain underexplored. Are
companies missing out on hidden market
potential waiting to be tapped?

R

ecent analysis of EU consumers' attitudes to seafood
would seem to suggest so.
Above all, a study by the
European Commission reveals that
consumers attach great importance
to the healthiness of these products,
and that almost half of the EU population eats seafood at least once a
week.

"This survey is about how we Europeans choose our seafood. This insight will help us better meet consumer demands. But
by definition, making a choice means having a selection to choose from. Our job is to make
sure that consumers continue to have a wide selection of healthy, high quality seafood
from which to choose. That is why we are so committed to reaching the EU targets on sustainable fishing by 2020," said European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime
Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella.
The survey finds that EU consumers are open to trying new products and species,
highlighting the potential for diversified sourcing and innovation in the supply chain. It
also underlines the growing importance of supermarkets, while the expertise of specialised fishmongers brings further opportunities for diversification. Looking ahead,
ready-to-eat/ready-to-cook products will become more important.

Join us for a debate of these findings with Mr João Aguiar Machado,
Director-General, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
of the European Commission, on the 25th of April from 13:00 to 14:00.
Discussions will focus on how to increase both the sector's competitiveness
and consumer satisfaction. Producers, processors and retailers from across
the EU will explain how they are taking consumer expectations on board when
designing their marketing strategies.
The debate will also feature:
Mr Javier Garat, Secretary-General of CEPESCA
Mr Frank Carter, Wild Atlantic Shellfish Ltd.
Mr Jarosław Zieliński, Polish Association of Fish Processors
Ms Veronika Pountcheva, Global Director Corporate Sustainability, Metro AG
European Commission experts will be on hand for information sessions as well
as for bilateral meetings and information queries.
