Flatfish, kings in the Netherlands
NOT TO BE MISSED
❙ Dutch Seafood Company - Stand 7-1853
D.G.
Foppen and Klaas Puul recently merged and join forces under the
name Dutch Seafood Company. Last year, the organisations, respectively, celebrated their 100-year and 50-year anniversaries. "The
merger of these two organisations will provide us with a stronger
market position and it allows us to serve our clients even better,"
said CEO André van der Padt. Foppen is a leading salmon smoker
with production sites in the Netherlands and Greece. The company
is known for its innovations, high product quality and front-runner
position in the USA. Klaas Puul is a shrimp processor with production
sites in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Morocco.
The high plaice quotas in 2018 will not benefit Dutch fishermen as only 55 % of the quotas were caught.
ner the market anymore. Although it still
has the largest market share, the flagship
flatfish from the Netherlands must now
share with other species. The high plaice
quotas in 2018 will not benefit Dutch
fishermen as only 55 % of the quotas
were caught. Hard to find, this fish has
deterred some fishermen who prefer
to target other species such as squid or
gurnard. These, which were previously
undervalued, now represent a significant commercial asset for the country.
The low inputs of plaice have pushed up
prices in the fish auctions, forcing wholesalers to buy an ever more expensive raw
material. At the Urk auction, the average
price for 2018 was 2.56 euros/kg, that is
35% higher than in 2017. The rocketing
prices penalize the processing industry
which has to supply its factories.
are increasingly present in the daily
consumption of the population, especially in Europe. In the Netherlands and
elsewhere, buyers are always looking
for more convenient products. This demand leads the processing companies
to offer practical and varied recipes.
NorthSeafood has embarked on the
development of 4-minute, ready-to-use
recipes using a microwaveable bag. The
company has thought of twenty frozen
« fish and sauce » combinations for European distributors. Constantly reinventing themselves, Seafresh has been working for a few years to offer a weekly
recipe to its distributors, by means of
flash sales relying on the seasonality of
fish. All types of innovation can help the
company to stay in the race and attract
markets. Companies are investing in
ever more efficient production lines and
are trying to stand out from their neighbours and competitors, as far as frozen
and fresh products are concerned.
Teun Visser, director of the Urk auction, expects the resource to return
by the end of the year, but processing
companies have been anticipating for
some time now and have looked for alternative sources of supply. While some
companies are turning to Alaskan plaice,
others do not hesitate to launch into salmon or cod.
EU short-circuits electric pulse fishing Dutch electric pulse fishermen have two
years to switch back to a conventional trawl system. The European Union
has come to a decision: "Electric pulse
fishing will be totally banned for EU
fishing vessels in all their fishing territories, including outside the EU, as of 30th
June 2021," says the report.
❙ The Scottish Salmon Company - Stand 9-4217
A heavy blow for the Netherlands,
which has been using this fishing technique for many years. " We have worked
on new, more ecological, more selective
fishing methods but they are still not
approved " says a Dutch fisherman.
Disparaged by NGOs including Bloom,
electric pulse fishing divides, partly for
lack of scientific data currently available.
As a precaution, Brussels has therefore
chosen not to grant any further derogations from that date.
The Scottish Salmon Company is the first company producing exclusively Scottish, top-of-the-range salmon. The company controls the
whole production line from smolt farming to marketing, with a staff
of 600 employees at 60 sites in some of the most remote and rural
areas on the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides. All farms are
GlobalGap certified and The Scottish Salmon Company has received
the 2-star Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) certification. The company
was named a finalist for the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards
2019 (Producer, Company and Export Company of the Year). Its Tartan
salmon Label Rouge is also a winner of the Seafood Excellence Global
Award. The Scottish Salmon Company also stands out for the other
products in its range, which includes Lochlander salmon and Native
Hebridean salmon.
